Squash: Yan Xin targets quarters at British Open
By AFTAR SINGH
KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Yan Xin was the last Malaysian to bag a title in the British Junior Open squash championships, winning the girls’ Under-13 competition in 2003.
This time, the 16-year-old Selangor lass will be playing in the Under-17 category of the championships, which begins tomorrow in Sheffield. Yan Xin has been seeded fifth-eight and she has only set a target of reaching the quarter-finals.
“I will be up against the best players in the world and it will be difficult for me to go beyond the quarter-finals. However, it will be a good learning experience for me as I can still feature in the same category in 2010,’’ said Yan Xin, who reach the quarter-finals of Under-15 event last year.
Yan Xin has a first-round bye and she is expected to play against Rebecca Quiney of England in the second round. In her half of the draw are third-fourth seed Nouran Alaa El Torky of Egypt and second seed Olivia Blatchford of America. The top seed is Nour El Tayeb of Egypt.
In preparation for the Open, Yan Xin played in the NSC Satellite No. 5 tournament last month and she did well to reach the semi-finals.
Malaysian have another player in the Under-17 competition — Low Wee Nee, who is the third-fourth seed.
The other Malaysian players to feature in the Open are Ivan Yuen and Kamran Khan (boys’ Under-19), Darren Subramaniam (boys’ Under-15) and Low Wee Wern and Rachael Goh (girls’ Under-19).
